At the very beginning, I didn’t have a clear theme, but I personally love cars, so I was very excited about this assignment. However, I had no experience in drawing, so I chose to use the simplest method: line art + color + shading.
I didn’t set any specific theme. I chose to draw freely, hoping to get inspiration from the sketches. My sketches have two branches: one leans more towards using animals as means of transportation, and the other features vehicles that have characteristics of animals.

After some improvisational drawing, I found animal cars very interesting, so to ensure that the buildings and prop fit the theme, I set the theme for this project as ‘The World of Cats’.
This is not a simple alternate world, nor is it about directly replacing humans with cats. Instead, it is a world designed based on the characteristics and habits of pet cats, with its own unique and independent worldview. In this world, there are only cats, cat food, and things that interest cats.
Immediately after, I started searching for the resources I needed. I first confirmed the car models I wanted to use as references. I have always been very fond of vehicles with round headlights, such as the Porsche 964 911, the Volkswagen Beetle, and those classic cars.

However, I also wanted to incorporate features of a cat, so I thought of the Catbus from Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films. But obviously, Miyazaki intended this vehicle to be a living creature, whereas I only want the vehicle to have cat-like characteristics. Therefore, I only use the Catbus as an artistic reference.

So I first took the Volkswagen Beetle as my design prototype. Then I tried to add more cat-like features to it, but the first attempt obviously failed, because I found it looked more like a dogXD
However, this rough little dog car also gave me more inspiration. I redesigned the cat car and adjusted the vehicle’s proportions, making it rounder and cuter.
I changed the wheels to use a cat’s limbs for movement, and I think it looks particularly cute and silly.
I also added a wide body and a crash beam, which are some of my personal preferences. I think this makes the vehicle’s stance look better. It’s worth mentioning that the tail at the back of the car is used as a spoiler, but from an aerodynamic perspective, it doesn’t really function as a spoiler. It acts more like a tail fin, which can provide additional steering assistance.
However, during my painting process, I discovered a particularly big problem. Because I have a severe mental illness, my hands shake a lot, and even when using brushes with stabilization, it still happens. Additionally, because I have mild color blindness, I am not very sensitive to colors. After watching many tutorials, I chose to use a brush that produces a marker-like effect for painting. This allows me to better create a sense of volume, and from my perspective, I indeed achieved a work that satisfies me.
It’s worth mentioning that although I based it on the Volkswagen Beetle, the final work seems to resemble a Porsche 964 more:)
